There is a lot more to a fly reel then simply holding the fly fishing line. The reel when fighting a big fish can mean the difference between a nice trophy photo or one that got away.
Some fly fisherman may initially use the reel much to play the fish, instead using their hands to hold and strip the lines for tension. Once the excess fly line is taken up by the running fish, then the reel comes into its own. A poor quality fly fishing reel can vibrate to pieces, especially if it is a supreme fighting saltwater fish like a bonefish speeding away.
Some cheap reels are okay for chasing small trout and pan fish, but if you are a keen angler than it is worth investing in a good reel. The low quality ones can seize up at the worst times and will corrode easier or the fly line doesn't run out as smooth. Even tension on the fly line is essential and a jerky mechanism can break the fishing line easy. In fact as long as the fly fishing reel can hold enough backing and fly line, the drag system is probably one of the most important feature of the reel.
An extra feature to look at, when buying a fly reel is an extra spool, which is great if you also have an intermediate or sinking line as well. This will allow you to fish most conditions, by quickly changing the spool, instead of carrying around expensive extra reels.
Another important characteristic of the reel, is to look at the balance and weight of it. If you spend several hours casting, the reel can not only feel like a ton of bricks, but can also make the fly casting not as efficient. A happy fisherman is likely to catch more fish and that means being comfortable, a well balance outfit helps achieve this when casting.
Fly fishing reels have various retrieving methods, such as a multiplying reel, automatic reel or a single action gear. For normal size fish, a one turn on the on handle will wind the reel one turn is adequate. For big game saltwater species a good retrieval system is vital.
There are thousands of designs and sizes of reels available today. A good fly fishing reel can help you land the fish of your dreams, a bad reel will always let you down at the wrong time, so choose wisely.
